E-Learning Explained

What is SCORM?

Understanding the standard that powers modern e-learning and why you might want to convert your SCORM content.

SCORM in Simple Terms

SCORM stands for Sharable Content Object Reference Model. Despite the technical name, the concept is straightforward: SCORM is a set of standards that allows e-learning content to work with any Learning Management System (LMS).

Think of SCORM as a universal language for online training. Just like how a DVD player can play any DVD regardless of which studio made the movie, an LMS can run any SCORM course regardless of which company created it. This interoperability is what makes SCORM the most popular e-learning standard worldwide.

💡 Quick Definition

A SCORM package is typically a .zip file containing HTML pages, images, videos, JavaScript, and configuration files that tell an LMS how to launch the course, track progress, and record completion.

SCORM Versions

SCORM 1.2 (2001)

The most widely adopted version. Simple, reliable, and supported by virtually every LMS. Ideal for basic tracking of completion and scores.

  • ✓ Universal LMS compatibility
  • ✓ Tracks completion and pass/fail
  • ✓ Basic bookmarking support
  • ✓ Simple score reporting

SCORM 2004 (4th Edition)

More advanced features including sequencing and navigation control. Enables sophisticated learning paths and prerequisites.

  • ✓ Advanced sequencing rules
  • ✓ Detailed progress tracking
  • ✓ Complex navigation options
  • ✓ Better data model

Good news: SCORM Converter supports both SCORM 1.2 and SCORM 2004, automatically detecting which version your package uses.

Who Uses SCORM?

Corporations

Employee training, compliance courses, onboarding programs, and professional development.

Educational Institutions

Online courses, distance learning, blended learning programs, and student assessments.

Training Providers

Professional certifications, skill development programs, and continuing education courses.

How SCORM Works

1

Package Structure

A SCORM package is a .zip file containing an imsmanifest.xml file (the course map), HTML/JavaScript content files, media assets (images, videos), and sometimes PDFs or other resources.

2

LMS Integration

Upload the .zip to your LMS (Moodle, Canvas, Blackboard, etc.). The LMS reads the manifest file, extracts the content, and makes the course available to learners.

3

Communication & Tracking

As learners progress through the course, JavaScript in the SCORM package communicates with the LMS using a standard API. This tracks progress, scores, time spent, completion status, and quiz results.

Popular SCORM Authoring Tools

SCORM packages are typically created with specialized authoring tools:

Articulate Storyline
