Articulate Storyline SCORM Export: Extract Slides, Layers, and Quizzes

Convert your Storyline courses to PDF, Word, or Markdown. Preserve slide content, layer text, and quiz interactions.

7 min readUpdated January 2026

Articulate Storyline is the industry standard for creating interactive e-learning. Its slide-based approach with layers, triggers, and complex interactions makes for engaging courses—but also challenging extraction. This guide shows you how to convert Storyline SCORM packages effectively.

Storyline Optimized

SCORM Converter includes a dedicated Storyline parser that understands slides, layers, and Storyline's specific content structure.

Understanding Storyline SCORM Structure

Storyline's SCORM output differs significantly from Rise 360 or other tools:

Slide-Based Structure

Content is organized into slides within scenes. Each slide can have multiple layers containing additional content.

Interactive Elements

Buttons, hotspots, drag-and-drop, and click-to-reveal interactions are controlled by triggers and states.

Timeline-Based Animation

Content appears at specific points in the timeline, with animation cues controlling visibility.

What Gets Extracted

SCORM Converter extracts all text-based content from Storyline courses:

  • Slide text: All text boxes, captions, and titles from the base layer
  • Layer content: Text from all slide layers (feedback, additional info, etc.)
  • Quiz questions: All question types with answer options
  • Feedback text: Correct/incorrect feedback for quiz questions
  • Images: Slide images and graphics (embedded in export)
  • Notes: Slide notes (if published)

Supported Quiz Types

All Storyline quiz question types are supported:

  • Multiple Choice (graded and survey)
  • Multiple Response
  • True/False
  • Fill in the Blank
  • Matching
  • Sequence / Ranking
  • Hotspot
  • Drag and Drop
  • Numeric Entry

Questions are extracted with:

  • Question text
  • All answer options
  • Correct answer(s) indicated
  • Feedback text for each response

Step-by-Step: Extract Storyline Content

Step 1: Publish from Storyline

In Storyline 360, go to PublishLMS. Select SCORM 1.2 or SCORM 2004 (both work). Use these settings for best extraction:

  • Include HTML5 output (default)
  • Don't compress images excessively
  • Include slide notes if you want them in the export

Pro Tip

SCORM 2004 exports typically include more structured data, which can result in better extraction quality for complex courses.

Step 2: Upload to SCORM Converter

Visit the SCORM Converter dashboard and upload your Storyline .zip file. The system automatically detects Storyline courses and applies the appropriate parser.

Step 3: Review Extracted Content

After extraction, you'll see your content organized by:

  • Scenes (as major sections)
  • Slides (with all layer content)
  • Quiz sections (grouped questions)

Review each section to ensure content was captured correctly.

Step 4: Export Your Format

Choose your export format:

  • PDF: Professional document with embedded images
  • Word: Editable format for reviews and updates
  • Markdown: Clean text for technical workflows

Working with Storyline Layers

Storyline's layer system is powerful but can be complex. Here's how extraction handles layers:

Base Layer

The main slide content extracts first, forming the primary content for that slide in the export.

Additional Layers

Each layer's content is extracted and grouped under the slide, typically labeled by layer name:

### Slide 3: Safety Procedures

Main content about safety procedures...

**Layer: Correct Feedback**
Great job! You correctly identified the hazard.

**Layer: Incorrect Feedback**
Not quite. Review the safety guidelines and try again.

**Layer: More Information**
Additional details about safety protocols...

Handling Complex Interactions

Limitations with Interactions

Some Storyline interactions are difficult to represent in static documents:

  • Software simulations: Screen recordings become static images
  • Drag-and-drop: Descriptions of what should be dragged where
  • Dial/slider interactions: Start and end values extracted
  • Complex branching: All paths extracted, may need manual organization

The extracted content captures the information, but the interactivity itself can't be replicated in PDF or Word.

Storyline Variables and Conditions

Storyline courses often use variables to control content display. Extracted documents include:

  • All variable-controlled text (all variations)
  • Conditional layer content
  • Text from different states (normal, hover, selected, etc.)

This means you may see some repeated content if the same text appears in multiple states. Review and clean up as needed for your use case.

Best Practices for Storyline Export

1. Use Clear Slide and Scene Names

In Storyline, give slides and scenes descriptive names. These become headings in the export, making navigation much easier.

2. Label Your Layers

Name layers descriptively ("Correct Feedback", "Additional Info", "Step 2 Details") instead of "Layer 1", "Layer 2". This makes the export more understandable.

3. Keep Text in Text Boxes

Text embedded in images or created as graphics won't be extracted. Use actual text boxes for important content.

4. Review Quiz Extraction

Complex quiz interactions may need manual cleanup. Verify all questions and answers are captured correctly.

Storyline vs. Rise 360 Extraction

Both are fully supported, but Storyline's flexibility means more variation in how courses are built—and thus more variation in extraction results.
